Switching Google Webmaster tools reports to Google Analytics

Google analytics is a freeware utility for website SEO management and optimization powered by Google. GA's reports are regarded the best for any marketing website, business blog, or even personal blog. GA delivers you the robust information on different technical resources(Real time, Intelligence events, Audience, Acquisition) you can avail to leverage more optimizations for your site to increase visibility on search engines. To give more power to Google analytics to show reports on queries, landing pages and geographical summary we can switch our Google webmaster tools reports to Google analytics. Here's how you can do it

1. On the Webmaster Tools home page, click Manage site next to the site you want, and then click Google Analytics property.

Google Analytics property

2. Select the web property you want to associate with the site, and then click Save.

How to find long tail queries on Google Analytics?

Once you linked your GWT reports to GA you would have a vast list of queries reports also their impressions, clicks, ctr etc. report. So you have to navigate “Acquisition” then “Search engine optimization” and “Queries”

Here you can see a list of keywords that drive you organic traffic from search engines and obviously the highest search volumes you would see at the beginning of list.

Keyword suggestion

For example once i navigated to my queries tab on GA i saw following reports and i picked the keyword “google reader alternatives 2014” and dropped on Google search box to get instant suggestions.

Google Instant report
Now i find some relevance of keywords once i typed only “google reader alternatives” it suggests me for “google reader alternatives mac” and “google reader alternatives android”.

Now i'm pretty clear that i can rank on any of segment of keywords for the same phrase that is providing me more organic traffic from search engines.

I picked “google reader alternatives android” and run some deep analysis of keywords that how i can manage the title properly. To do so i run another experiment to see what Google sees about the keyword “android”. I used this “~” symbol before the keyword “android” and hit enter. After running some branstorming i found Google sees “android” “developer” and “apps” when typing keyword only “android”

Android suggestion on Google instant

Finally i made this title “google reader alternative apps for android” to focus on three distinct keywords

One: my organic long tail keyword “google reader alternative”
Two: “apps” that will help to modify keyword “android”
Three: “android” that is the main focused keyword of this title

Don't be so covetous while picking keyword suggestions

Now in this advanced SEO era every blogger and webmaster is becoming too oversmart to optimize keywords. They believe including more relevancy of keywords having highest search volumes on search engines will rank pages rapidly. But the idea is truly wrong and i have the real time experience on it, when i was a beginner and didn't know the ABC of optimization, seo of a blog post specially for keywords and title tags. I picked the highest search volumes of short tail keywords two or more according to my topic and made a complex post title including a bundle of keywords. I thought any of the keywords including this title tag will rank my page on search engines.

But in the long run i found my article even not getting targeted page views so getting ranked is too far. Even doing so your site may be penalized because this is also called keyword stuffing that is treated as a black hat seo tactic according to Google and other search engines webmaster guidelines.

Now how to get perfect matched keyword according to my long tail seo? An important question, actually you have seen how i found my niche based long tail keyword using GA, exact match keyword suggestions, and finally picked one specific keyword that can enhance my new article on existing long tail keyword that is proving me organic traffic. So you should only add in keywords that you are pulling from “Google suggest” if you feel it helps readers to understand the topic also search engines to rank on long tail seo.

Be aware of Keyword density

Keyword density is an important terminology which determines the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. In the contextual search engine optimization keyword density can be used in determining whether the webpage is relevant or irrelevant to a specified keyword or keyword phrase. As a rule of thumb normally the keyword density for a specific keyword should be less than 3%. There are several tools you can use to measure keyword density for a particular keyword
  1. www.keyworddensity.com
  2. tools.seobook.com/general/keyword-density
  3. www.iwebtool.com/keyword_density

Don't be flooded out with the tactic without hard work

Now you got the idea how to track long tail keyword for free without having purchased any keyword research tool like HitTail, Longtail pro etc. Remember that the queries Google analytics shows you are exactly delivered by Google webmaster tools and because of GWT's strong features they do some some additional data processing i.e. handling duplicate content and visiting from robots.

Now it's time to do hard work i mean writing the content then apply all the white hat seo techniques. Here is a quick list of white hat onpage seo
  • Writing quality article that is likely to be shared on social media
  • Reduction of rich anchor text
  • Optimized images with ALT tag
  • Content should be more than 500+ words.
  • Content should include seo rich H2, H3 tags
Note that an article on existing long tail seo technique takes at least 3 or 4 months to come in ranking on search engines because this is a long run process so you can't expect big in short run.

Conclusion

Your sincerely works are the best seo practice that are available to you and i have shown you such an smart and easier technique of applying long tail seo over your blog posts.
